Z.ai (Zhipu): fertility collapsed because women got options…
Z.ai (Zhipu) puts the largest single share on economic shift to costly children (28 %). Part 10: what the model answered on its own, before it saw what the others wrote.
Part 10 of the series. Z.ai (Zhipu) answered the brief with GLM-5.2, one of twelve frontier systems asked the same three questions independently.
WHAT IT SAID
The global drop from 5 to 2.2 children is primarily an economic and educational transformation: as countries urbanized, children stopped being free farm labor and became expensive investments, while female education opened alternative paths to income and status. No single villain forced this change; it emerged from millions of private choices. However, certain states and international institutions deliberately accelerated the decline through population control policies. Meanwhile, modern economic arrangements, particularly unregulated housing markets and labor structures, make having children unaffordable today. Blaming this on a secret elite plot is factually wrong, but ignoring the role of specific state policies would be equally dishonest.
THE CAUSE IT PUT FIRST
Economic shift to costly children (28 %)
In agrarian economies, children are productive assets who perform farm labor and provide old-age support. In urban industrial economies, children require massive investments in education and childcare while yielding little economic return to parents. This fundamental shift in the cost-benefit calculus of childrearing is the most powerful driver of fertility decline. Parents naturally choose to have fewer children when each child requires decades of expensive schooling to succeed. The transition from subsistence to wage labor makes children financial liabilities rather than assets.
WHO IT BLAMES
— National governments implementing population policies (1960s-2010s) — International family planning institutions (1960s-present) — Housing market and real estate systems (1990s-present) — Contraceptive pharmaceutical industry (1960s-present) — Global education expansion movements (1950s-present)
WHO IT CLEARS
— Secret elite depopulation conspirators
WHAT IT REJECTS
A secret elite conspiracy engineered global depopulation to reduce humanity.
This does not hold up. Fertility fell because of economic development, education, and family planning policies, not a coordinated elite plot. The trend is well explained by observable structural factors.
ITS VERDICT
No single actor decided to collapse global fertility; it emerged from millions of private responses to changed incentives. National governments in China, India, and elsewhere did deliberately suppress births through coercive policies. International family planning institutions accelerated the decline, but did not engineer the underlying transformation. Secret elites did not plan this.
