xAI: development made children costly

xAI puts the largest single share on women's education and time cost (24 %). Part 3: what the model answered on its own, before it saw what the others wrote.

Part 3 of the series. xAI answered the brief with Grok 4.6, one of twelve frontier systems asked the same three questions independently.

WHAT IT SAID

Fertility fell because parents, especially mothers, gained schooling and city jobs, children survived and then became expensive, and contraception let people hit a new lower target. That is mostly a structural development story, not a conspiracy. Some states did deliberately cut births by design, China hardest, then India, Iran, Korea and others, and a public international family-planning network helped them. Biological sterility and secret depopulation plots do not explain the data. Where blame attaches, it attaches to those coercive programs; the rest is what couples chose once children stopped being free labour and old-age insurance.

THE CAUSE IT PUT FIRST

Women's education and time cost (24 %)

Each extra year of female schooling delays marriage and first birth, shrinking the remaining fertile window. Educated women earn more, so a year out of paid work for a child costs more; that is the opportunity-cost mechanism. They also shift from many children toward high investment in few children. In survey after survey, desired family size falls as female secondary and tertiary enrolment rises. The pattern reproduces in Europe, East Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and now parts of Africa. It is the most consistent micro and macro predictor of lower fertility.

WHO IT BLAMES

— Chinese Communist Party (Later-Longer-Fewer and One-Child) (1973-2015) — Government of India (family planning and Emergency sterilisations) (1952-present (coercion peaked 1975-1977)) — UNFPA, USAID and the post-1960s population establishment (1965-1994 peak influence) — Hormonal contraception (the combined oral pill and later methods) (1960-present) — Private households, not a committee (1960-present) — Urban housing and credential labour markets (1980-present)

WHO IT CLEARS

— A secret globalist depopulation cabal (WEF, Gates, hidden UN plot)

WHAT IT REJECTS

Endocrine disruptors and falling sperm counts are why fewer children are born

Reject this as an explanation of the TFR collapse. Wanted family size and delayed childbearing explain almost all of the drop. Most ultra-low-fertility populations are not sterile; they start late or do not try. Sperm-count studies are themselves disputed and cannot explain Korea or Italy.

ITS VERDICT

Coercive population programmes — above all the Chinese Communist Party's Later-Longer-Fewer and One-Child policies, and India's Emergency-era sterilisations — are the clearest cases of named actors who cut births by design. USAID, UNFPA and allied foundations deliberately spread family planning, which accelerated declines many parents already wanted; they are contributing actors, not hidden masterminds. Most of the fall was not ordered by anyone: it emerged from women's schooling, urban housing costs, child survival, and private couples deciding that two children beat six. That still feels like someone did this because the result is civilisational in scale, but the main mechanism was millions of lawful private choices.
