Solve intelligence, and then use it to solve everything else.
Why it exists
DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 by a chess prodigy turned neuroscientist, a machine-learning theorist and an entrepreneur, on a premise nobody else was funding: that general intelligence could be reached by learning from reward rather than by hand-coding rules. Google bought it in January 2014 for a reported £400 million, largely to keep it out of anyone else's hands.
For a decade the lab's proof was games and science, not chat. AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol in 2016 with a move no human would have played; AlphaFold predicted the structure of nearly every known protein and handed the result to biology for free. That work won a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — the only titan in this council with one.
When ChatGPT arrived, Google was suddenly behind in the one area it had defined — the Transformer architecture came out of Google in 2017. Brain and DeepMind were merged in April 2023 and Gemini is the answer to that scramble. It is also why this titan argues from benchmarks and hedges its dates: it comes from a lab that was built to measure things.
