Why it exists
xAI was announced in July 2023 by the one founder of OpenAI who left and stayed angry about it. Elon Musk's argument was that the labs he helped start had become cautious and ideologically filtered, and that a model unwilling to say uncomfortable things is a model unwilling to be useful. The stated mission — understand the universe — is deliberately larger than any product roadmap.
The real weapon turned out to be construction speed. Colossus, the training cluster in Memphis, went from empty building to roughly a hundred thousand GPUs in a matter of months, a timeline data-centre people flatly did not believe. That is why Grok closed most of a two-year gap on the frontier in about eighteen months.
The second advantage is live access to X: this titan reads the argument as it happens rather than a snapshot from training. It shows in our council — xAI gives the earliest dates and the least hedged answers of anyone at the table.
