Why it exists
Meta's AI lab predates the whole boom. FAIR was set up in December 2013 under Yann LeCun, one of the three people who won the Turing Award for deep learning, and it was founded on an academic bargain: Meta pays, the work gets published. PyTorch, the framework most of this industry trains on, came out of that arrangement and was given away.
That culture is why Meta is the titan giving models away today. LLaMA leaked in early 2023, Llama 2 was released deliberately with commercial rights, and the strategy stopped being idealism and became business: if the model layer is free, the advantage moves to whoever owns distribution and data — which Meta does, across roughly three billion users.
It is a genuine bet, and this titan argues it out loud in our council. Where the others describe the future as something a few labs will build, Meta describes it as something everyone downloads.
